Nicotine gum, if not help to quit smoking pregnant lady, but to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked daily for a few pieces may well help. This means that with the help of nicotine gum can reduce the risk of having a premature baby with low birth weight.
U.S. researchers studied 194 pregnant smokers, randomly dividing them into two groups, one of which received nicotine gum, and the second – gum “pacifier”. The test lasted six weeks, chewing gum is used in a downward pattern. All women provided consulting support for smoking cessation. Women, and believes that they will not quit smoking were asked to try to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked per day, replacing them when necessary, chewing gum.
As a result, the number of quit smoking in both groups was roughly equal. However, with the help of nicotine gum number of cigarettes smoked per day decreased by an average of 5.7 units, whereas the use of “dummy” has caused a decrease of only 3.5 cigarettes per day.
In addition, infants of women who used nicotine gum, at birth weighed significantly more than in “pustyshechnoy” group, and were born closer to term.
Despite the positive effects of nicotine chewing gum on the date of childbirth and infant weight at birth, the study’s authors, however, objected to the use of pregnant nicotine gum on a regular basis, because the study of the effect of nicotine on animals revealed the emergence of cellular abnormalities that may lead to sudden death of the child. For this reason, pregnant women use nicotine gum and other nicotine replacement agents was not approved.
